Museum Gouda owns a magnificent collection of religious art. Exhibited are not only altar-pieces from just before the iconoclasm, but also arts and crafts found in clandestine churches of the second half of the 17th century. In addition, two sketches of the “Goudse Glazen”, the original designs in scale 1:1 of the world famous stained glass windows of the St.-Jans church ( 16th century ) are permanently on display in the museum.
These three components of the collection demonstrate how strong the catholic church has been in the northern parts of the Netherlands, before as well as after the transition to protestantisme. The greater part of the altar pieces can be seen in the “ Gasthuiskapel ”, room 12.
